Week 2: Progress on Weight Loss Regimen

Hello Readers,

It has been a great week. I was feeling fitter and leaner already (at-least psychologically) and then the reading on my new weighing scale confirmed it this morning: I am down 2 pounds already!

So what have I been up to since last week? Besides Biking to and from work, I am doing light exercises, nothing fancy – just 5 minutes weight training and stretching every evening. I’ve also developed a software application for myself that I am using to keep track of my daily calorific intake. It really helps to curb my urge to over-indulge (in carbs) when I see a running total of what I’m putting in my belly in real time.

I know, I don’t look much overweight in appearance, but to reach my ideal BMI (22.5) I need to lose 20 pounds (make that 18 now) and my readers will remember that this idea of weight loss came to me as a byproduct of my plan on saving money by living without a car. I have invested some money though, in items that will help me in my weight-loss journey. Here is the list of items I’ve bought (since the start of my weight loss regime). It came out cheaper than the $150 I would have spent on filling a car’s tank with a month’s supply of gas and unlike gas, this is one-time ‘investment’ for me and not a recurring monthly charge:

Week 1 – Biking to work: Weight loss Regimen starts!

UPS brown truck delivered my new bike over the weekend. Amazon.com did a great job of packaging and delivering on time. (Note to self: Shop online at Amazon.com for Dad’s this year’s Father’s Day gift or email him an Amazon GC) Assembly of my bike was a breeze and it looks and runs great.

I’m using my older son’s bike helmet today.. So I still need to buy a decent bike helmet, bell, mirror, light, lock, and a bike computer. Will shop around online and offline stores for these accessories and will share when I find best deals.

Today also marks the start of my weight loss regimen. As of today, I weigh in at 185 pounds and my target weight at the end of six months is 165 lbs. Wish me luck!

Today, On Memorial Day 2013!

May 27th 2013, 11:14 PM

Hello Readers, Hope you guys had a great memorial day weekend!
We honor and thank the brave men and women who serve us selflessly.

This memorial day will be etched in my memory forever. My car, after serving my family selflessly for 15 years, died today!

So what do I do now? OK, Are you guys ready for this…. I will NOT buy a new (or a used) car! Yes, I have been wanting to try this for a long time. And now, when the Good Lord has presented the opportunity to me, on a platter, no one can stop me from grabbing it with both hands, not even DW. The favorable thing for me here is that our home has a very good walk-score. Kids can walk to school, we can walk to shopping, doctors office, post-office etc! This will save me a huge amount of money (for example: buying car, sales tax on new car, interest on car loan, dmv transfer fee, annual smog test fee, annual registration fee, car insurance, periodic maintenance charges and above all GAS!) I estimate a monthly saving of close to $500-600 per month here.

I will need to buy a bike (and related accessories) though, for commuting to work. This will guarantee at least 6 miles of biking for me each weekday. Another thing that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time is shedding the extra pounds that I’ve accumulated over the past 15 years of being pampered by my car.

So I am putting my money on the fact that this, “messy situation” as my wife termed it this morning, will definitely be a blessing in disguise for us and over the next 6 months, We will be doing 2 things:-

1.) Saving at least $500 per month.
2.) I intend to lose 20 pounds in the next 6 months. Besides biking I will also take care of what I put into my mouth and do some exercise / weight training at least 2-3 times a week.

I will try to post regular updates on this blog about my progress.

I already got started, by ordering a Pacific Men’s Stratus Mountain Bike for myself from Amazon.com. I got a great memorial day deal. It cost me $99.99 and I got Free Shipping. I guess, it should be delivered in a couple of days. I will write back as soon as I take my first ride on it.

Good Night and bye for now.
